About Us

Siam Sailing is owned and managed by Dutchman Maxim Jurgens.

It started in The Red Sea

Max bought his first yacht, the 63 ft ketch "Stressbreaker" in 1989. After an extensive refit he and his girlfriend Annette set off for the Red Sea, then still a wild and little explored cruising ground. For some seven years they made a living offering long distance sail/scuba diving charters in Egypt, Sudan, Yemen, Eritrea and Djibouti. Max and Annette were fortunate in experiencing some of the very best diving to be found anywhere.

A strong desire to see trees again after all these years of desert coasts saw Stressbreaker heading for Thailand in 1997. For three years diving charters to the Similan and Surin islands as well as trips in Burma were undertaken. Both Max and Annette found however that their passion for diving charter was on the wane. The arrival of their newborn daughter Pip dictated a change in life style, so Stressbreaker was sold.

Siam Sailing: a charter company in Thailand

Max, meanwhile, freelanced on many different sailing yachts and thus gained an indepth knowledge of the Thai Andaman sea coast as a cruising area. He quickly came to love it. Besides enjoying the picture postcard islands he discovered he much enjoyed to sneak up small rivers and creeks, working the tides and always in search of new exciting sights. He decided that a sailing charter company would be his next venture. Thus Siam Sailing was born.

Max saw there was definitely a market and only a few charter yachts were on offer at the time. By now he had a pretty good idea what in his view the ideal charter yacht for Thailand should be like and it was nothing like the regular offerings available.

Custom-built Wharram sailing catamarans

Siam Sailing catamaransThe yachts he wanted would need to be quick, spacious on deck, able to take the ground on the beach or in his beloved rivers and to withstand the odd knock or bump which inevitably comes with this kind of "adventure" cruising. This all pointed towards multihulls and more specifically Wharram catamarans.

With help and input of the Wharram design office several modifications and adaptations were made and the Swiss–run Seascape Boat yard in Chalong was commissioned to build two Tiki 38's and two Tiki 30's. The boats are designed and constructed specifically for bareboat charter along the Andaman Sea coast of Thailand.

Delighted charter guests

Over time, charter guest's feedback proved Max's vision right: the boats are ideal charter yachts.

And Max still has the same passion and enthusiasm as he had when he started off in Thailand fourteen years ago. He has new projects too and is now building a Pacific flying proa. Watch this space!
